There were some good waves, there were some fun waves and there were some contestable waves, but it wasn’t good enough to run the Roxy Invitational Mozambique this year. Still, the best female surfers in the country were gathered in a remote location for a week of good surfing and great fun.
“We really wanted the best girls in the country surfing against each other in good surf,” said Quiksilver and Roxy Marketing manager Dane Patterson. “This event is unique in so many ways, being an all-girls, remote location invite-only event with great prize-money, and we wanted the girls to experience some insane waves for an event for a change. We spoke to the girls and they were of they same opinion, rather wait till next year.”
Over the last couple of days the girls went surfing, scoring some good waves the first day as well as a few fun ones in the onshore winds. They went fishing, they went diving and they had some fun on the beach. Games were going down, and the girls were enjoying the sublime weather and relaxed atmosphere.
Instead of running the event, the girls went for a free surf in the fun peaks on Thursday afternoon, closely watched by the contest organisers. It was then decided that the best surfer in the water would win a performance award of R1000. This prize was awarded to Stacey Guy from Melkbosstrand, who was the most dynamic surfer in the water.
“We didn’t want to run this event in substandard conditions,” said Barry Wolins from Quiksilver and Roxy. “The criteria for this event is simply great waves, with some serious barrels. When it turns into fruition it’ll be a world class event that will blow people away.”
This unique event, the first of its kind, offers R10K for first place, R3k for second, R2k for third and R1k for fourth. It is by invitation only, and twelve of the best female surfers in the country, as well as two alternates, are invited. The contest venue is a long and perfect sand bottom point-break in southern Mozambique, and when the event runs, there will be jet ski assistance for the girls in their heats.
