In the Footsteps of…

Surf pros head south in winter. Here’s how to follow them…

Sarah Bentley, Pro Surfer (Roxy)

Fave winter destination: Costa Rica. The surf is consistently good, the water is warm and it’s a really chilled-out place.

From dawn till dusk: Go surfing, chill in a hammock, take long beach walks, do yoga, see wildlife, go horse riding and quad biking.

Always in my suitcase: A different bikini for every day, body moisturiser and hair conditioner.

Don’t forget: Sunscreen, mosquito repellent, board and wax, lots of bikinis and some good books.

Best beauty tip: Put conditioner in your hair after every surf.

Want to go? Kelea surf spa runs surfing and pampering breaks in Costa Rica throughout the winter. At £825 full board for a week (including surf instruction, hire, massage and yoga), this will be one trip you and your girlfriends will never forget! www.keleasurfspa.com

Nicola Bunt, Pro Surfer (Animal)

Fave winter destination: Indo (Indonesia). The Balinese people are so friendly and there are heaps of breaks to surf and places to explore.

From dawn till dusk: Surf, barter at the markets, go fishing with the locals, visit the temples, see the crazy monkey at Ulawatu and drink cocktails on the beach.

Always in my suitcase: Sunblock factor 30, aloe vera after sun, and GHD hair straighteners because I can’t live without them.

Don’t forget: Jaws on DVD! Only joking, take some good girly reads.

Best beauty tip: Drink heaps of water and wear lots of sunblock.

want to go? Stay at Bali’s buzzing Harris Resort on Kuta Beach and learn to ride at surf school. It’s a perfect beach for beginners and an idyllic spot for chilling out and partying. Bigger breaks are just round the corner for experienced surfers. Visit www.surfer-girl.com

Sophie Hellyer, Pro Surfer (Roxy)

Fave winter destination: Where I live in north Devon is just as good as anywhere if there’s a good swell and good wind. It’s never busy in winter and there are secret waves galore.

From dawn till dusk: Surfing, wakeboarding and watching surf movies with the fire on.

Always in my suitcase: iPod, laptop and camera.

Don’t forget: A 5/3mm wetsuit, boots and a hood. Oh, and some wellington boots for trekking through the muddy fields and down the cliffs to secret spots.

Best beauty tip: Go natural, it’s much easier!

Want to go? If you’re set on ice cream headaches and the luxury of your own wave, follow Sophie and head out in winter with a 5/3mm wetsuit and neoprene accessories! Surfing Croyde Bay in Devon runs BSA-recommended surf tasters, day and weekend courses. Visit www.surfingcroydebay.co.uk.
