Billabong Girls Pro Itacare Surf Contest Set to Kick Off Today!

Organizers of the Billabong Girls Pro Itacare even tried to get the event started on Thursday, but due to the strong winds and stormy conditions with waves in the 4 to 6 foot range, they had to postpone the event. Next call will be today at 7:30am local time.

The city of Itacare has already transformed into the capital of women’s surfing until August 27th, when the wainting period of third event of the Women’s World Championship Tour will finish.

“We had to suspend the event due to the strong winds. Tomorrow morning we hope to have better conditions”, explained Daniel Friedman, event director. “We preferred to start the event tomorrow because we didn’t have enough time for all the heats of the first round this aftenoon. We have plenty of time to wait for the best conditions. Tomorrow the event should start early in the morning in the full tide, then stop in the low tide and restart in the afternoon, once again in the full tide, when the conditions should be better”, said Friedman yesterday.

“The conditions aren’t good today. Ever since I got here, I could only surf two days ago, and it was really tough out there,” said Tita Taveres, who won the Billabong Girls Pro Itacare last year. “I never thought I would find such tough conditions here. I have to be prepared to any condition in order to get a good result. I feel a bit nervous and all have to do now is to keep concentrated and focused.”

Another Brazilian surfer in the Billabong Girls Pro Itacare is Jacqueline Silva, who leads the WQS ranking and won the WQS event in England last Saturday. “I’m so stocked! Last year I struggled until the last event in Haleiwa (Hawaií) to qualify for this year’s WCT. It’s been really tough so far this year and I’m feeling confident to compete in front of this crowd,” said Jacqueline.

Jacqueline was also happy about Billabong keeping the event in Itacare. “I won my first WQS title in 2001. This year, Jessi Miley-Dyer has been competing really well and should be my main opponent in the race for the WQS title. Billabong made a great decision keeping this event in Brazil. It took a long time for us to have a WQS event here and once again, Billabong decided to support this event. It’s amazing to compete in front of my home crowd and I hope the title of the Billabong Girls Pro Itacare stays in Brazil.”

The Billabong Girls Pro Itacare, third event of the ASP Women’s World Championship Tour 2007 and 12nd of the WQS is sponsored by Bahia’s State Government , GOL, Nixon, Von Zipper and Kustom.
