It was time for a little discriminative shred so a couple weeks back I headed to Morzine for the Roxy Snow Camp. Obviously you had to be a girl to join in with this exclusive week of snowboarding! Each year, the chaps at Roxy bring on the hospitality for a 7-day camp, with lessons from Mint Snowboarding and a day on the mountain with the legendary pro shredder, Olympian and Roxy team manager Lesley McKenna. It’s guaranteed improvement all round with a great supportive crew environment to hit the slopes with. What more could you ask for? Well, how about 5 star pimping chalet accommodation provided by Starski complete with sauna and jacuzzi? The tastiest food plus daily cakes from the hospitable chalet hosts? Plus evening entertainment such as snowboard movies, waxing your board tutorials and highlight, of the week, the fun games night, featuring Penguin Pile up and Creationary!
This year, slush was the word of the week as conditions were the optimum in spring shredding, snow had fallen the weekend before arrival but bluebird days and warm temperatures meant the pow was long gone. Out came the couple mm shorter pop boards and for us a chance to trial next seasons Roxy Banana Smoothie! Each day the crew hit the park to improve on their freestyle skills; kickers, boxes and rails. Supported by Mint and supported by the slush! Photographer, Euan Baxter was on call (with worthy sidekick, cough cough) to get the shots for some technique evaluation and holiday souvenirs. Afternoons were free for all to cruise round the vast Portes du Soleil terrain, the perfectly balanced schedule of organised shred school and DIY snow time.
A worthwhile weeks holiday, it certainly beats lazing around as everyone left Morzine a better snowboarder and satisfyingly knackered. Thanks Roxy and Mint Snowboarding! Looking forward to next year!
