Cooler Folio: Lydia Garnett

Ever wondered who the image makers behind our fashion pages are? The photographers, stylists, illustrators, hair and makeup people, set designers? All you see in the finished picture is a model wearing clothes… Well, we are proud to introduce you to the impressive portfolios of one of our style contributors and find out what makes them tick every week from today. First up is London based  photographer Lydia Garnett who shoots documentary portraiture and fashion with a stripped back aesthetic.

What did you like most about shooting the ‘wish you were here’ main fashion story in the current issue?

It was one of the rainiest shoots I’ve ever done, but the model looked amazing with drenched wet hair and skin.

What’s your dream shoot location?

I’m down for beaches

You work somewhere between fashion and documentary photography, how ‘real’ can a fashion shoot be?

I think it’s really interesting to shoot natural style, I like to see how people wear things like the way school kids change their uniform to make it their own.

What qualities are you looking for in a model and who’d be your favourite model ever?

Effortless confidence and natural style. I’ve been lucky enough to work with some incredible subjects over the years.

Massive generalisation, but who has better style, girls or boys?

Somewhere between the two is good

Is there anything you’ve always wanted to shoot but are too scared to?

Not yet…

You just launched your own mag, what’s it all about?

Accent Magazine is a portrait project, the idea is to document and celebrate individuals who live outside the ordinary. It’s an online archive of portrait stories from all over the world.

And here is a little gallery of shots Lydia did for our current issue. On a cold rainy day in Whitstable…
