Ahead of the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Roxy has released a super cool GO TORAH BRIGHT! video interview, which you can watch below. But in case you’re worried about buffering or just want to the highlights even faster than pronto. Here they be.
She talks about her family and especially her bro Ben, who is also her coach, indirectly and directly leading her into contests:
As a kid I was the second youngest of five… we all very active… we fought a lot, we were all feisty…we competed in everything swimming, soccer, tennis, netball, skiing everything, competing is what I’ve done and what I know, so when I started snowboarding it was natural to do contests
My brother Ben is my coach and he’s helped me take my snowboarding to a whole new level…he made me see I could break through the boundaries that were placed on female snowboarding and he instilled a belief in my ability that allowed me to be able to push myself on my snowboard
And she talks about her 2010 Winter Olympics Gold medal winning run and is humble enough to say it just meant she was the best in the world on that day rather than more generally:
In 2010 I won the Olympic snowboard half pipe and it felt really good on that one day that counted to be able to put down the run I wanted… for it to be the best on the day felt huge. Pre Olympics I was concussed, I didn’t know if I was going to compete, I spent more time off snow than on snow and during that time I was able to relax and ground myself…
And then she talks more philosophically about how snowboarding doesn’t define her and how that realisation helps her perform at her best:
So when I got to the Games I was like snowboarding and whether I win or not does not define who I am as a human and it doesn’t define who I am as a snowboarder in a contest, it’s just snowboarding…I learnt a lot about myself…if I can relax and have fun then I get the most out of myself…
Torah then goes on to talk about entering all three snowboarding disciplines at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi as we’d discussed with her in the current issue. You can read that interview here and watch the video interview we discuss above here:
