Only one year ago, Nikki Misurelli led a pretty normal life. Living in Alaska with her boyfriend, she had a full time job, lived in a traditional house and drove a Honda car.
Today her life looks very different, she's sold all of her belongings, motorcycled 1,750 miles across the planet and is now living the most unusual life imaginable. Sleeping in a different city every night, Nikki stays in tents, on sofas, in hostels and wherever else she can find a space and basically leads the true adventurer's dream.
So what made Nikki decide she had to leave comfort behind and make this huge change? Her boyfriend told her he didn't think she was tough enough to do it....
"He said he wanted to motorcycle all the way from Alaska down to Argentina," says Misurelli. "I asked him if I could go with him but he said it was a ‘guys only’ trip and was too 'dangerous and intense."
"So we broke up and I went by myself."
Since the day she dumped the guy and hit the road, Nikki has ridden her adventure bike through Italy, Spain, France, Gibraltar, Portugal, Austria and Slovenia, and Morocco, as well as through the west coast of the Americas, covering over 12,000 miles in total.
“I want women around the world to get out there and get travelling"
Through short stints of work, followed by long stints of travel, Nikki has found a way of exploring indefinitely.
“A lot of people just assume I’m rich," she says. “But it’s not true. I have no house and barely any possessions. I pulled all my retirement money and sold almost all of my belongings. It’s amazing how little we actually need in life."
There's nothing more annoying to any adventurous women, than someone doubling our abilities and strength, simply because of our gender. We love this story of a woman giving the ultimate middle finger to such outdated and sexist ideas.
“I want women around the world to get out there and get travelling" says Misurelli. “If you want something enough, you can make it work," she says. “That’s how I feel about travel."
Such an amazing story, we're definitely channelling Nikki next time someone tries to make us doubt our abilities...
