Coast, Caves, Cliffs And A Four Day Music Festival. Is This The Most Adventurous Weekend Ever?

Go surfing, climbing, running and kayaking at Somersault Festival. Oh, and then go see some music...

Has anyone else noticed that festivals seem to be focusing less on mindless hedonism this summer and more on good clean fun?

From yoga, to climbing to cycling, it seems you can do a whole array of sports at music festivals this summer.

No matter what your favourite festival is offering however, we bet you any money that it won’t match up to the amazing weekend that Somersault Festival has planned for the 23rd to the 27th July.

Held at Castle HIll in North Devon and near the coast, Somersault is not just a festival with activities as added extras, the activities are as much at the heart of the festival as the music.

“We’ve got surfing, stand up paddle boarding, coasteering, rafting, canoeing, kayaking and mountain biking, trail running and  also rock climbing!” says Jules Swanne, who is heading organisation of the activities at the festival.

“We’ve got a whole fleet of double decker buses that feel kind of retro, so the idea is to show everyone how magical it is around here while they experience something new.”

We love the idea of going surfing in the daytime before heading back to watch Ben Howard and Laura Marling with a cider in the evening!

“There’s nothing like it, music wise or festival wise.” says Jules

“It was brilliant last year and quite unexpected in the sense that you just walked in and went ‘wow, this is unlike anything else i’ve ever been to.”

With a stellar line up featuring a great mix of folk, indie, pop, funk and reggae, the festival is a chance to experience a laid back festival while also getting the chance to have a unique experience of the surfer’s corner of the UK through the surfer’s eyes.

“You’re packing up and going away for the weekend and a festival just happens to be going on” says Jules.

“It’s the best of both worlds, you can go and do something up on the coast, but you don’t have to be there all day. You have a festival, but you can still go out for half a day and get a breath of fresh air and do something totally new.”

So do you have to book before you get to the festival or can you just settle into the North Devon vibes and go with the flow?

“We makes sure it’s not sold out beforehand” says Jules.

“Last year when the surf instructors were walking around the tents in the evening, people were high fiving them and saying what a good time they’d had and other people suddenly saw the sun, fancied a surf and decided to give it a go!”

This is great news, as we don’t know yet it we want to rock climb, paddleboard or kayak, but we definitely do know that this sounds like the raddest festival of the summer!
