What do you think about the portrayal of female athletes and surfers in the media? Do you think there’s too much emphasis on the way they look rather than how they surf?
I do feel that sometimes it can take away from the talent that these women have. But female surfers are beautiful. They’ve got great bodies because they’re athletes so it’s really hard for it to not be portrayed in that way. A lot of them surf in bikinis so obviously that’s what you see in pictures.

Is it sexist?
Some people think so but I don’t really. I’d be a hypocrite if I thought that because my own career is forged on being a model as well. They do sexualise it a bit and I don’t think we’ll ever escape that but as long as we know what’s going on then that’s all that matters and I don’t really care!

Are you watching the ASP Women’s Tour much this year and if so, who impresses you the most?
To be honest I’m actually quite bad…I haven’t really been following the tour that much, but for me my favourite surfer has to be Stephanie Gilmore. I just love her style. When I do catch her in a video, I think she’s amazing. Her surfing is so effortless. For me, I tend to catch up on video posts and highlights from the day. I don’t really have time to watch it properly. I’d rather be surfing than watch surfing.
