We’re always keeping an eye on what filmmaker, Hayley Gordon of Leashess has in the pipeline. So here we catch up with her to find out her favourite piece of work, how to get into filming and what she’s got coming up for summer!
Hi Hayley! What’s your favourite piece of work to date?
I think that Holes In The Map, which I did for Korduroy.tv, is one of my favorites. We road tripped up the west coast from San Diego to Tofino in British Columbia, Canada. We got so incredibly lucky with good weather and waves. We saw so much cool stuff on that trip. It also pushed me – I’m kind of a homebody and I’m not used to being on the road in an RV for so long. I’m really proud of some of the shots we got on that trip. We saw so many bears, went to the Sequoias, saw almost the entire coast, swam in random rivers and streams, picked up hitchhikers, got swarmed by wild black bunnies, climbed 3 story piles of logs. We capped it off with a last minute sunset session at Canon beach in Oregon – it’s one of the most dramatic backdrops for a wave. We pulled up and the colors in the sky were just breathtaking and the right was a bit bumpy but breaking well. We had about 40 minutes before dark and to Jen Smith’s credit she paddled really far out at a wave she had never even seen before and got some amazing rides. I still get chills when I see that footage.
And what advice do you have for someone wanting to get into filming?
I’d say get your hands on a camera and just start shooting. Take some classes. Watch a ton of surf and skate videos (or whatever sport or genre you’d like to pursue). And dream BIG.
So, what inspires you?
I get inspired by my friends. I’ve grown so much through working with our crew of surfers and skaters. I also get inspired watching other people’s film work – I love seeing how other people view the world.
And what do you love to do?
I love to surf! I haven’t been doing enough of that lately. I think I need to go get in the water this afternoon!
