Pro Chat: Becky Jaques, Skateboarder

We met skater, Becky Jaques, a couple years back on a trip to Malmo to check out Ultrabowl. The only girl on the Rollersnakes team, she rips it alongside the boys, inspiring girls to just roll into the park without batting an eyelash. Here she tells us a bit about what she’s been up to…

Hey Becky! What are you up to right now?

Right now, I’m living in Nottingham studying for my masters degree, skating as much as I can and hanging out with my rad boyfriend.

What’s your story with skateboarding?

Well I started skating when I was 19 years old thanks to my younger brother Sam who rips, convincing me to try it at his birthday party – I loved it and have skated ever since. I was unlucky and a few years ago ruptured my ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in my left knee and had to have three lots of surgery and well over a year in recovery which sucked but since then ‘touch wood’ its been good! Since that I’ve been skating loads and been to some amazing places and met some really rad people.

You’re on the Rollersnakes team, how’s that crew? Did you enjoy the summer tour?

Yeah I’ve skated for Rollersnakes for about two years now, it’s rad! The team are amazing, I love them all. The summer tour was really good! We did demos at a few parks and hit lots of street. It was really good fun.

Any funny stories to spill or is it what happens on the road, stays on the road?

Haha, the trip was pretty funny. It couldn’t have not been with the likes of Morph, John Bell and Dylan Hughes with us to laugh at constantly. The whole crew was rad though cant wait for the next one!

What have you been up to over the winter?

I started off winter with a slam to the face at mini ramp champs which sucked but mini ramp champs was rad. X-Site skatepark Skegness, where its held every year, had a makeover and the new street course is really good! I can’t wait to get back over there to skate it again. Living in Notts now I’m really lucky to have both Flo skatepark and Asylum skatepark just down the road as well as a pretty good ramp at the Rollersnakes shop in derby! Me and Stef Nurding also went over to Munich for ISPO and skated the Volcom ramp and hung out with people, drunk lots of german beer and accidentally booked a hotel in the red light district!

What’s your favourite trick to pull out the bag?

Difficult question! Frontside grinds.

Any exciting skate trips planned abroad? Or summer plans in general?

Unfortunately this year is the first year I don’t get a summer holiday in years! So I’ll be stuck in the laboratories at Uni a fair bit ,but I’m sure I will find plenty of time to get out in the sun! I’m keen to get down to Boardmasters again and want to get to Ultrabowl too! I went to Bilbao last year and it was the best place I’ve ever been so I’d like to get out there again too.

You helped me to drop in for the first time, good memories, can you recommend the best way to learn to skate as a girl?

I did and it was so rad! The best way? Probably just go for it! Don’t run before you can walk, don’t be scared to fall over! And ask the guys to help you!
