Pro Chat: Lyn-Z Adams-Hawkins

One year after her cover girl interview, we caught up with skate prodigy Lny-Z Adams-Hawkins to learn all about what happened since and what it’s like to be married to an action hero like Travis Pastrana

What have you been up to since our cover girl interview last year?
Well, I got engaged June 4, 2011 and married October 29, 2011. I drove a buggy in the Baja San Felipe 250 racing with my husband Travis. I drove a NASCAR for DRIVE4COPD. I started driving shifter karts for fun, I decided it would be fun to learn to ride BMX, and I’ve continued to learn to ride dirt bikes. I’ve been on a few tours with Nitro Circus Live and once again became a character in a Tony Hawk Video Game. Oh yeah and I got my first street bike, a beautiful Cafe Racer built and designed by my friend Roland Sands Designs for a TV show called “Cafe Racer” on Velocity.

Back then you said you want to get involved with the Women Sports Foundation one day, how’s that going?
I’ve been involved with them since I was about 16. I’d just like to get more involved, I haven’t really had a chance to do much more yet. I just try to be available for them if they need me to be at an event, to answer questions of help promote what they have going on. For example it was just the 40th anniversary of Title IX so they launched a campaigned called Keep Her In The Game that involved a bunch of athletes including myself to post a photo of ourselves at 14 or younger with “If I walked away at 14 I wouldn’t be here today” in our own words. We did this because at 14 girls drop out of sport at 2 times the rate of boys so we wanted to show girls what they could achieve by “staying in the game”.

With no more Girls Vert in the X Games, are there any big contest left for girls in that discipline?
No, there are still no women’s skateboard vert events. Although it seems there are more girls skating vert then ever.

Is there any chance at all to get it back you think?
I’m not sure, I would guess that they would start a women’s park event before they would put women’s vert back in because there are way more girls who skate park/bowls then skate vert. I think that would be good because it’s still transition and the level of skating from men to women is closer.

You’ve been touring with the Nitro Circus last year, what was that like?
I’ve toured Australia and New Zealand for the past 3 years with The Nitro Circus Live tour. It’s really fun! We have an awesome “Nitro Family”. We get to do a lot of fun stuff in between shows and it’s pretty awesome skating in front of so many screaming fans. It’s good to show people that girls can skate too. We head to Europe this fall so be sure and check out nitrocircuslive.com to find out where we’re headed!

What was your favorite show so far and why?
Well we did a one off show in Las Vegas, Nevada USA last summer (June 4, 2011) and during the show my now husband Travis proposed to me in the show!

Did you anticipate about that?
No way! I was shocked, so shocked I didn’t land one single jump in the show because I was pretty much shaking and dazed the whole night since he proposed at the beginning of the show.

You also have your own character in the new Tony Hawk video game, how did that come about?
Haha yes, even this being my 4th year having a character in his game it’s always funny seeing my character. I’ve been skating with Tony for over 10 years so when they needed a girl for the game back in 2006 they thought of me.

What did you have to do for that?
They do this crazy full body scan of you and take lots of photos of you so they can get all the wrinkles in your jeans and stuff. Then they also put you in this funny suit with all these funny ping pong ball looking things on it and do some motion capturing so that your character will skate just like you.

What other plans do you have?
At this point I’m just going to continue skating on The Nitro Circus Live tour, skating the Mega Ramp and the Mega Ramp 2.0 (Mini Mega) in hopes other girls start skating them too and maybe they will have an event for us. There is already this 11 year old girl Alana Smith who skates the Mega Ramp, skates vert, and is amazing in all aspects of skating. She is for sure the future of women’s skating!

And last but not least, probably what all the girls out there wanna know: what’s it like to be married to a daredevil like Travis?
Haha, well it hasn’t changed my life style too much except I’m technically a “NASCAR Wife” now and that’s surprisingly fun. I’ve enjoyed learning this new world of NASCAR and meeting new people. It’s like a traveling neighborhood when we bring our motorhome. I’ve also picked up riding dirt bikes and have gotten a BMX bike and mountain bike in hopes to start riding those when we’re actually home. It’s a very hectic fast pace life but we get to spend most of it together so thats all that matters.

Anything else you’d like to get off your chest?
Nitro Circus The Movie 3D comes out in theaters world wide August 8, 2012.. Go see it! It’s amazing!
