Surf

From surfing broken tourist boards to turning pro, the remarkable story of Bonne Gea from Nias, Indonesia

How is surfing on the ASC Tour?

It is fun and full of excitement and also nerves at the same time. You’re nervous because you might win or lose, especially if you go to a place you’ve never been before. I have to think is it going be an easy wave to ride or hard? It’s fun because I meet lots of new people, and I learn a lot from it, especially on my surfing skills. It was a very good experience.

If you were not a professional surfer what would you be doing now?

I would probably still work in the hospitality industry back in Nias at the family business, surfing in my front yard with no sponsors lol….

What do your parents and family think about you surfing?

My parents and family were of course against everything I did at the beginning. As a Nias woman I was supposed to stay at home and get married at early age or look after the whole family, cook for them, washing their clothes and cleaning the house. Just to be at home all the time.

But now they know that I’m very good at it and make money out of it, and I’ve proved to them that I can look after myself, so they’ve changed the way they think of me, they’re more supportive towards my career now.
