The World’s ‘Greatest Freediver’ Disappears During 130ft Dive

53 year old Natalia Molchanova is presumed dead after failing to resurface on a recent dive

Freediver Natalia Molchanova has disappeared after failing to resurface on a 130 foot dive of the coast of Formentera in Ibiza, a few days ago.

The 53 year old diver is widely considered the best in the world, holding an incredible 41 world records and 23 world freediving titles.

Molchanova was using no line and on the recreational dive, which was around 100 feet shallower than her deepest dives.

On the day of her disappearance, Molchanova’s dive partners, with the coastguard and helicopter  searched for her until the sun set.

The search party has continued for a straight three days, using an underwater robot, but there is still no sign of her.

“The world has lost its greatest free diver,” fellow diver Will Trubridge told the New York Times.

“I don’t think anybody would dispute that.”

Molchanova’s family say they do not hold hope for her being found.

“It seems she’ll stay in the sea,” says her son Alexa. “I think she would like that.”
