Chic treats in Wales

If you’re looking for a mixture of surf and glam, few places manage to compete with the glassy waters of Wales.

We all know that surfing is the epitome of sporting glamour. What with our bronzed torsos, endless days in the sunshine and powdery white beaches. Ahem, cut to summer in the UK however and the reality of surfing isn’t quite as peachy. Yeh, we still have our bronzed torsos (or red for most of us) but it’s still of a battle against grey skies, wearisome rain, and the sting of cold and raging offshore winds. But every now and then we’re blessed with the perfect day and there’s no reason why British surfing can’t then retain its glamour.

Ok, so Wales isn’t the first place you think of for a glamorous weekend on the waves but the country’s changing its face. Once thought of as a laid back and rural arm of Britain, Wales is now a haven for active weekends away, where the dragons and daffodils are being coupled with luxury accommodation and fine restaurants.

So if you find yourself stuck in Britain, Wales is ideal for surfing and the country has a huge variety of spots to suit all levels, ranging from the sheltered surf and clean swell lines of Caswell Bay to the challenging reef breaks of Crab Island on the Gower Peninsula. Whether you’re a pro with your own gear or just starting out you can get involved here.

Gower Surfing Development is the only four star British surfing school in South West Wales and offers lessons and personal surfing development for everyone, from the absolute beginner to the surf connoisseur. Check them out at

And now for the glamour…

As the sun sinks into the horizon and the daytime breeze softens to a gentle breath, your day’s surfing comes to an end so why not wash the sea salt and seaweed out of your hair at one of Wales’ luxury spa hotels. After selfishly indulging in fantastic treatments, head out for some fine dining at one of the many great eateries on offer. There’s also a great selection of gastro pubs, and seaside cafes if you’re looking for something more low key.

Whatever you’re style of glamour, there’s something for you. In fact, small luxury hotels are popping up everywhere, each with their own distinctive style and offering a different kind of hotel experience from the usual seaside resort.
