KICKING HORSE, CANADA If you’re a die-hard skier or boarder get yourself to Canada’s Kicking Horse resort (better known to those in-the-know as simply 'The Horse') which is home to cracking skiing and the second highest vertical in Canada. It’s only new but one that the crowds will soon be heading to in full force. Aside from great skiing, and an abundance of ski gurus and ski gods, it also has an amazing restaurant - the Eagle's Eye, Canada’s highest restaurant, with stunning vistas across the Rockies.
TIGNES, FRANCE Set high in the magnificent Savoie Alps, Tignes offers some of the best skiing in Europe with guaranteed white stuff all year. There is an excellent choice of villages to stay in but Val Claret, Le Lavachet and Tignes-le-Lac are probably the best. Val Claret, the highest, has superb access to all the skiing action as well as a lively après ski scene, while Le Lavachet has easy connections into Val d'Isère and a free bus service to Tignes-le-Lac throughout the day and night. The lively Tignes-le-Lac is the hub of the resort with runs leading directly back into its centre and an ultra-modern sports centre.
ST ANTON, AUSTRIA St. Anton is well and truly at the centre of the Arlberg Ski-Circus and you will all know it as one of Europe's top ski resorts, drawing ski buffs from all over the world. The ski area is huge; covering not only St. Anton's own mountains, but also the neighbouring villages of St. Christoph, Zürs and Lech and offers some of Austria's most extensive and hard core skiing. The cosmopolitan vibe of this famous village also ensures plenty of activities off the piste for everyone with lively bars a plenty and plenty of chances to swap the skis for your dancing shoes!
ZERMATT, SWITZERLAND Spectacularly situated beneath the majestic Matterhorn, Zermatt has everything to offer in the way of fantastic skiing, picturesque surroundings and a lively nightlife. It’s a car free zone with only electric taxis and horse drawn sleighs to get you around the gorgeous streets, which are packed with beautiful shops and boutiques, whilst charm hangs in the air. Zermatt's three ski areas all rise to at least 3,100m and here you will find the highest ski lift in Europe - The Klein Matterhorn (Gobba di Rollin) at 3,820m – not one for those with vertigo! If you want to pop off somewhere different you can make your way to Breuil-Cervinia in Italy, which is connected to Zermatt.
LA ROSIERE, FRANCE Resting on a high sunny plateau at 1,850m, La Rosiere is one of the highest villages in the Alps. Situated high above Bourg St Maurice on the Petit St Bernard Pass, it is the last village before crossing the border into Italy and a truly stunning resort with awesome views towards Les Arcs. It’s a great resort to visit with the folks or younger family members, with excellent nursery slopes near the village, while you can heat the more advanced pistes and chutes.
YLLAS, FINLAND Ylläs, is full of Lappish atmosphere and an ideal destination for adrenaline hunters or those after something a little more chilled out. It has a crisp, dry climate so is pretty darn snow sure through one the long ski season. The uncrowded, floodlit slopes are ideal for beginners and intermediates, while the sheer choice of activities means that you can hang up the skis in favour of something different. Ylläs is the home to the longest runs in Finland, inlcuding 58 slopes. It has two ski schools, one in each village where you can try your hand at slalom, cross country, telemark, or off-piste skiing.
Borovets has got the lot and is in the top visited ski resorts in Bulgaria. It is Bulgaria’s first ski resort, dating from the 19th century when it was only known to an exclusive few - but now everyone has the opportunity to experience this fun-packed, snow filled spectacular destination! Set amidst the majestic forest-clad Rila Mountains, once a hunting ground for Bulgarian Kings, Borovets is now internationally renowned. If you haven’t discovered this premier ski resort yet, you’re in for a treat!
BOROVETS, BULGARIA Borovets rests on the northern slopes of the Rila Mountain at an altitude of 1,350 metres. It enjoys a perfect location at the foot of Mount Moussala, the highest peak in the Balkans. It has over 40 km of gorgeous mountain slopes total with excellent snow cover from November until May. There is a lively après ski scene but rightly so, skiing is the prime concern and Borovets is justly popular with all grades of skiers, with a setting that’s near perfect. There is 2 km of runs right in the heart of Borovets that are maintained by six snow cannons, covering the area with artificial snow that grooms better and lasts longer than natural snow.
