As 2014 draws to a close, and Xmas parties, their resulting hangovers, and time-wasting on the internet replace doing even the merest pretence of work, we thought you might enjoy this little look-back at our most read features of the year. A thousand YAYS that none of them involve nakedness or mention of the ESPN Body Issue (well in the list we're going to declare official anyway…).

First up the mighty Sally Fitzgibbons, one of the most inspiring surfers on the planet, gave us her 9 best fitness tips, from using running as sightseeing to revelling in challenges and how the best sports advice she ever had came from the tennis player Martina Navratilova.

The Van Doren Invitational Women's Contest at Huntington Beach last summer went off! As this video edit starring Nora Vasconcellos (above), Allysha Bergado and Lizzie Armanto more than shows. As Thrasher Magazine said at the time: "If this doesn't get you hyped, you may well be dead." We're stoked you thought so too.

Shane McConkey and his family - Portrait

This was a fairly heavy chat we had back in spring with Sherry McConkey, the wife of the late freeskiing legend Shane McConkey. She spoke openly about his death, coping with the criticism of him as a father and how she wouldn’t stop their daughter Ayla BASE jumping if that was what she wanted to do (though she understandably hopes she won’t want to).

This was such a BIG year for girls' skateboarding and we were fully stoked to see heaps of new girls wanting to get involved but we also thought it was pretty damn important to pass on some advice, especially for those about to shell out on their first skate set up.

£20 for a skateboard, what a steal right? Wrong. From graphics to price to wheel sets. All wet behind the ears skate novices should avoid these fatal skateboard purchasing errors at all costs!

Because female pro surfers are marketed like models it’s easy to forget they’re actually super gnarly athlete daredevils, chasing waves in waters that could kill them on a regular basis.

So we asked 10 pro surfers, including Stephanie Gilmore, Sally Fitzgibbons and Courtney Conlogue (above) to talk us through their most gnarly near misses, many of which involved the reef at Cloudbreak.

We interviewed the mighty Stephanie Gilmore at the start of the year before her historic sixth ASP World Title Win to chat about the new look Tour, how to get more British women into surfing and whether she'd fancy a turn in the Point Break remake. It ran in the magazine (RIP!) and was our sixth most-read feature on the site in 2014.

Maybe it was the summer breeze or something but we came over all giddy in last year's heatwave, swallowed a copy of Heat and came up with this action sports power couple list. Topped by the one and only Alana Blanchard.

We asked 12 snowboarders, from Torah Bright to Kjersti Buaas to Hannah Teter and Jenny Jones what advice they'd give their 16 year old selves and they gave us some belting answers. From going to see Michael Jackson to eat more sweets and break up with your boyfriend!

So that's almost a wrap for 2014. A wikipedia entry-tastic year which saw Stephanie Gilmore win ASP World Title number Six, Jenny Jones win the first ever Team GB snow medal ever in Sochi, girls' skateboarding GO OFF and us ask the really big questions, such as should you go topless!? And/or shave your armpits!? Plus actual important stuff such as why is doing stuff like a girl always seen as something negative and what should a girl skater look like?

We're back in the New Year. Have a blast!
