It’s not everyday that you find a coffee shop that’s really special.
Beyond all the Costa Coffees and Starbucks, there are independent cafes like this one – the Boardroom Coffee Shop in Cardiff – with something a bit different going on inside.
It’s a surf and skateboard cafe, inspired by the owner Caroline Nieuwenhuis’s love of riding waves and concrete bowls.
They have chairs made from skateboard decks and tabletops made from surfboards, plus surf and skate movies screening downstairs.
After travelling the world, Caroline ended up in Newquay, Cornwall, studying and working as a surf instructor.
“I loved the sense of community there among people who were interested in boardsports. It was something that my home city Cardiff was lacking.”
“I wanted to create a place for people to meet, discuss their love for surfing and skateboarding and form a community feel within the city.”
She moved back home and the rest is history.
We like the sound of their top-notch cappucinos, roasted by Origin in Cornwall, and bagels smothered in melted butter and chocolate flakes.
The Boardroom also sell suspended coffees for anyone looking to fulfil their good deed for the day. The idea is you purchase a cup in advance for someone in need)
“Whether they’re a professional surfer or they’ve never even heard of a skateboard, we’re hoping that the uniqueness of the place will attract all sorts of people looking for something a bit different.”
