Etnies Girls Push Jam and Goofy Vs Regular Skate Contest

Words and photos by Ana Paula Negrão

This year marked the third annual Goofy vs Regular Etnies Skate Jam, so to celebrate the guys laid on a free concert by the Beastie Boys.

The unique format of the etnies GvR Skateboarding Contest pits two teams, Slap’s Magazine’s Regular Foot riders (left foot forward) against the Transworld Mag’s Goofy Foot riders (right foot forward), with each team appointing a Team Captain to lead the skateboarders during competition.

Mark Whitely and Joe Brook, co-captains of the Regular Team and editors of Slap Magazine, picked professional skateboarders including Ryan Sheckler, Andrew Reynolds, Bryan Herman, Chris Cole and Arto Saari. Editor in Chief of Transworld Skateboarding Mag, Dave Swift, acted as Team Captain for the Goofy Team, guiding hand-picked athletes including Nyjah Huston, Dennis Busenitz, Jereme Rogers, Matt Allen, Paul Rodrigues and Dylan Rieder.

The Girls Push Jam format was a little different from the rest of the contest. Each rider had two runs and then a further opportunity to showcase their skills in the Jam session (where all the girls skate together in the same heat). The women shredded up the skatepark in the Push Jam and Bowl Jam Contest with a much higher level of skating than at last year’s contest.

Marisa Del Santos, Evelien Bouilliart and Lacey Baker snagged the top three spots in the Push Jam. Marisa’s kickflip down the 12 stairs and backlip on the rail was insane! Very stylish. Evelyn Smith grind the rail and Lacey Baker performed an easy 360 flip over the cone. Vanessa Torres did frontside boards, frontside 50-50’s, and a frontside smith all down the 11-stair rail. Holly Lyons, Cressey Rice and Heidi Ftizgerald in the Bowl skate Jam. They took home more than $10.000,00 in prize money when it was all done.
