The pro junior circuit will soon be back in the news when the elite under 21 surfers gather in Sopelana, Spain, from 3-5th August for the ASP 1 star Island Style Pro Junior.
After opening their race towards the ASP Europe junior title in Portugal, both men and women will be ready to get on with the challenging new season of action, where some new faces are already rising. More experienced riders remain focused on the precious 875 ratings’ points and the multi-dollar prizes that will go to the winners of both categories.
This first ever pro junior event in the city of Sopelana is already crucial on the ASP schedule, and a great opportunity for the best locals to face the best that European surfing can offer, including defending ASP Europe junior champion Joan Duru (Fra) and current ratings’ leader Romain Cloitre (Reu).
With 96 men and an average of 30 women expected over the three day waiting period, the battle for the Island Style Pro Junior crown will offer some stunning action. Looking at the local hopes, high expectation is with current Basque leader Unai Arizeta and junior surfer Nikola Susaeta as they directly qualified for the main event thanks to the two wildcards given by organisers, giving them a chance to meet the best and potentially create some upsets…
Looking at the women’s event, local rising surfer Garazi Sanchez will have some serious opponents including regional defending champion Lee Ann Curren and current ratings’ leader Pauline Ado, two of the leading french pack that dominated the first pro junior event of the year in Portugal.
