Last week we took our lucky asses out to the inaugural Roxy Snow Pro in Saalbach Hinterglemm, Austria (watch the video highlights here!). Two years ago the same resort hosted the Roxy Chicken Jam and this new incarnation of that event, the Roxy Snow Pro, took place on the same contest site but with one crucial difference: the finals were to held under the power of darkness, at night, mwah ha ha ha.
Anyone who’s ever stacked it on an icy jump by day can probably imagine the fairly terrifying prospect of slamming chin first into the frozen floor by night. Yet our brave warriors including 14 year old UK rider Katie Ormerod and former cover girls Aimee Fuller, Cheryl Maas, Kjersti Buaas and our current cover girl Jamie Anderson, plus recent Pro Chat star Sina Canadrian cruised through the daytime qualifying and soon found themselves facing three floodlit runs each in front of a crowd of 1000 woop merchants.
The standard was sky high, especially amongst the top three. Jamie Anderson romped home in first (this girl just doesn’t lose!) with her trademark smooth spins and error-free shredding, including a Cab 7 nose grab, a switch backside 5 and the only hit the wallride saw that night. Cheryl Maas took second, though if she had landed the back 9 she so nearly did, that podium could have looked a little different. And last but not least UK super talent Aimee Fuller bagged third with some of the most crowd-pleasing moves of the night including Cab 5 underflips and back 5 rodeos – not bad considering she’s been out for the last five weeks with a gammy heel. Special mention should go to young Katie for not crumpling in the slightest under the pressure.
The girls headed on to Oslo for the World Snowboarding Championships and we went to bed for a week…
