Surf Relief Day at Watergate Bay Beach Festival

UK charity Surf Relief is currently working on exciting plans for a unique free beach festival at Watergate Bay this summer. Leading fashion lifestyle clothing label White Stuff has stepped in to sponsor Surf Relief Day 2007 and organisers and participants alike are preparing for what will be one of the biggest UK beach festivals of the summer.

The White Stuff Surf Relief Day will draw together live music, pro surfing and a raft of beach games at Watergate Bay, near Newquay on Saturday 7th July, and all money raised at the event will be used by Surf Relief UK (SRUK) to fund their current ‘Surfable’ project. Set up in the wake of the 2004 tsunami disaster, SRUK has evolved into a significant charity that helps introduce surfing to disadvantaged and disabled people across the UK and further afield.

The invaluable results of SRUK’s work in Sri Lanka continues to be felt and following last year’s launch of the innovative ‘Surfable’ project, young, deaf and partially hearing people from across the South West have had new, unique chances to take to the waves in a personalised, safe, supportive environment. This year the Charity aims to expand its work introducing other disabled young people to the sport of surfing.

White Stuff Surf Relief Day is a free beach festival at the awesome Watergate Bay and supported by The Hotel and Extreme Academy, Watergate Bay. A day and night of fun events for the whole family is planned with a host of beach activities including a Premier Sixes Beach Football tournament, a sand castle building contest, Ultimate Frisbee, face painting, a Rock Pool Roadshow with the Blue Reef Aquarium, a design your own White Stuff T-shirt competition and a beach BBQ.

The event will also provide surf coaching sessions for a number of disabled young people giving them an exciting new experience. And to get the event started with a guaranteed blast, five divers from the Cornwall Parachute Club will be literally dropping in on the White Stuff Surf Relief Day! The Sunset Sessions have been created with the assistance of Barefeet Promotions, the founders of the K Festival.

After a day on the beach, spectators, surfers, organisers and volunteers alike can chill back in the sand and enjoy some of the best music that the South West has to offer. Jackson Analogue, the Barnaby Ray Quartet, TwoSpotGobi, The Tarka Groove Experiment, and Johnny Pioneer are already confirmed.

The Jamie Oliver inspired Fifteen Cornwall will also be getting involved. Students from the restaurant will be helping out during the day. Buddying up with disabled young people in some surfing coaching sessions, the students will experience working with other disadvantaged young people introducing them to a whole new and exciting experience.

Throughout the day, the UK’s top surfers will compete for the SRUK Cup, and proceeds from their entry fees will go to the charity. Spectators can expect to experience a day of extreme competition and to see some inspiring manoeuvres. Categories include the White Stuff Surf Relief Open, the Surf Relief Day Women’s Competition, the Surf Relief Day Grommet Competition as well as a Fancy Dress Surf Comp (open to all) and a Fun Board/Swell Board competition.

Numbers for each category are limited and demand is expected to be high so if you are interested, sign up soon. Anton Roberts from Soundworx will be supporting the event, providing commentary and all the required PA kit throughout the day.
