Total respect to 25-year-old Kate Balchin, who is competing in the world’s most extreme arctic endurance adventures.
The police officer from Surrey, UK joins a select few finalists to fight for a place on the Fulda Challenge in January in Yukon, Canada. If she gets through, she’ll compete in ice climbing, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snow kayaking, mountain running and a half marathon to the Arctic Circle – all in minus 50 temperatures. Sounds like someone to give us cold weather tips…
Best all conditions gear: ‘For thermals I love Salomon, on the outside I wear a Bonfire jacket and, if I had the money, I’d buy arc’teryx gear.’
Best cold weather beauty: ‘I like to keep it simple and use Vaseline on my lips and baby lotion on my body.’
Best fitness training: ‘I compete in triathlons so most of my training is swimming, cycling and running based, with weights and circuit training for a bit of variety.’
Best adventure: ‘British Columbia in Canada or Queenstown, New Zealand, which offer endless adventure in amazing surroundings.’
