Yes, we’ve already had this clip on our site but the project behind it absolutely justifies the double post!
It’s the teaser for the Waves of Freedom movie project of Irish big wave charger Easky Britton, a documentary exploring how surfing and creative forms of expression can empower women in a place like Iran.
The shoot is scheduled to start in September with director Marion Poizeau BUT they still need some help and support to cover their production costs, so if you feel like this is a movie you wouldn’t want to miss, head on over to crowd-founding platform indiegogo.com to donate – every little bit counts and is a great help!
“The power of surfing and creativity as a means to break down cultural barriers & gender-based inequalities.”
Why we need your help and your reward in return!
We are a small but determined team with a desire for adventure and a passion to give voice to women and their perspectives and to help promote positive change.
Unfortunately, that alone is not enough to realise this campaign and we need your help.
What is crowdfunding?
Crowd funding is SAFE and SECURE and allows us to raise small amounts of money from many people like you to put this campaign into action.
Your contribution will go towards – Production costs including:
* Purchasing of film equipment
* Travel expenses which include International flights from Europe to Iran and domestic flights from Tehran to Chabahar on the SE coast as well as in-country road transport to and from the surf, etc.
* Food and lodging. As we will homestay and eat with local families where possible this will contribute directly to the local indigenous communities.
* Contributing to our local guides and interpretors
* Support for local women’s initiatives such as music, arts and crafts workshops/co-ops and sports equipment for girls.
We have put together a collection of tempting rewards (‘perks’) for those who wish to support the project which are listed here. Once you’ve completed your donation, we’ll send you a message with some questions to help us fulfill your perk request. Or you can even make a gift for family or friends. We hope you can join the team!
Over the course of this campaign we will keep you updated with our progress.
We only have a limited time to raise funds. Any support is greatly appreciated.
Other ways you can help
Spread the word about the campaign. You can use the indiegogo share tools to make some more noise!
Be not afraid to venture into the unknown, give back when you can and travel with an open mind and an open heart.
The Impact
Marion and Easkey’s debut 26min Iranian documentary featured on French National TV on October 31 2012 and received worldwide coverage, making National and International headlines and receiving positive review in print (The Guardian, The Irish Times, Irish Independent, Courier International, etc.) radio (BBC Radio 4, BBC World Service, Newstalk, etc.) TV (RTE, France O, Iranian TV), and online including making the top news story on BBC NI, October 3rd 2012, with 268,000 views.
On the back of this positive and encourgaging response we aim to continue to promote women’s voices and empowerment and encourage women in sport and the arts in particular. This follow-up, feature-length documentary seeks to show to an International audience, through International film festivals and TV broadcast, the power of surfing and creativity as a means to not only break down cultural barriers but also gender-based inequalities.
Thank you!
