Have you ever dreamed of standing a chance of winning against a pro kitesurfer? Of being a novice who can just kite up wind, have just started to do little jumps and feel you can hold your own with the best? Well Kite Beasts 08 gave everyone a chance to do well and have a weekend of pure fun with a big emphasis on team work!
Supported by Searles Leisure Park, Hunter’s Land Drover, Hunstanton Sailing Club and the Hunstanton Borough Council, Marcus Hawkins created the idea for an all new style of kitesurf event. It brought kitesurfers from all over the UK with all abilities to Hunstanton, Norfolk in teams of three to dress like idiots and compete in a variety of crazy activities on and off the water. The competition heats included Monster Air, Rocket Man and Sync or Swim (synchronised kitesurfing tricks of course!!!) where each team to could gain points which went towards the aim of the overall cash prize of £600!!
My girlie kitesurf team the Turbulence Angels have all been so busy this summer with me on the PKRA World Tour and many other side line projects such as the Charity Surfers Against Sewage signature board, Sheryl on the UK BKSA tour and Zoe with her new puppy dog Marly, we jumped at the chance of spending the weekend competing together at KiteBeasts.
As the weekend arrived I realised my foot was not quite fit for riding, so I took to the judging and commentary stand and called in stand-in Angel Marcus Burgess (Angel Zoe’s son) to join Sheryl and Zoe!! He did an amazing job and looked very glamorous with his flowing blond curly wig and pink angel dress with wings! I think I’ll have to call him in as a stand in more often!!
We all had such a fantastic weekend. Yes, even I did even though I was stuck on the beach! The commentary was so much fun, I hogged the microphone all weekend and now still don’t have a voice! Everybody taking part had huge grins on their faces all weekend so the event definitely worked. I was also so impressed with the number of girl’s teams that turned up (and wannabe girls as Marcus wasn’t the only one donning a wig!!) So many girlies got in the spirit so a big up to the Feisty Fairies and the Sunny Honeys out there, you were all ripping!
So a big thanks you to the Angels for doing such a good job without me! To Marcus Hawkins and all the event sponsors for putting on such a fun weekend and giving us an amazing little log cabin to stay in! To Flexifoil for providing the Angels with awesome kites that seem to synchronise super well! To Team Turbulence for heading down with us and forming the ‘Rabbit’ team – don’t ask!! To Land Rover for being so patient when they had to forcibly remove Angel Zoe from the steering wheel at the end of the weekend! And finally a big thanks to Marcus Burgess for being such a good sport and putting up with the ‘Man looks like a lady’ sound track every time he went on the water!
