Jessica, 25, who lives in London, works for Whizz-Kidz, a children’s mobility charity which provides equipment and long term support for disabled children. She has set herself a challenge to make it to the Nike+ Supersonic Final – a 1k race at a secret location followed by an exclusive concert headlined by Dizzee Rascal and The Enemy. But to win her place, Jessica needs to prove her pace at the speed trials – only the fastest thousand runners from these music-fuelled events make it to the final.
‘I’ve been running cross country since I was at school and have always been more of a long distance runner,’ she says. ‘Nike+ Supersonic appealed to me because it gave me the chance to try something new and sprint training is great for building my fitness for other sports.’
‘The 100m speed trial at Crystal Palace had a really cool underground feel. The mix of Nike athletes, celebrities, club and new runners gave the atmosphere a real buzz – it was great to have Kelly Rowland cheering us on. But it was the music that really set this event apart from anything I’ve been to before. It was definitely the music that helped to attract a different a kind of crowd – younger and more urban – which was really good to see.’
‘My best time was 16 seconds which means I qualify for the final – but things could change at the final speed trial on Friday so I’m looking to better it! This is my last chance to qualify for the 1k final on 17th November and I’m determined to keep my place!’
‘My friends call me the ‘running pusher’, I love it. It’s not just about the running. It’s the social side too – it’s great going out for a run with a friend, or just plugging in your i-pod and running to your favourite music.’
Jessica secured her at place the third and final speed trial which took place at Peninsular Square at the O2. She is now set to compete at the 1k Nike Supersonic final on 17th November.
