Sally Fitzgibbons v Carissa Moore at the Roxy Pro – what Steph Gilmore thinks

I love you but I also really want to beat you

So as mentioned in a previous post the four times ASP Women’s World Champ and proper legend Steph Gilmore will be competing this week at the Roxy Pro but she can no longer retain her title, so it’s going to come down to Carissa Moore from Hawaii or Sally Fitzgibbons (our last issue’s cover star) from Oz.

We asked Steph who she thought would win and she said, “I’m going for my fellow countryman of course as Sally is great but I think Carissa is probably in a stronger position right now, Carissa can win the title in France. There’s been all this talk of young girls coming through and performing for 3 years or so but now we’ve reached that point where they’re all at the top and fighting for the World Title.” To read more about what Steph thinks about losing her crown you’ll have to wait for our exclusive 6 page interview in the next issue, on sale at the end of July. Four world titles back to back is an insane achievement

According to the Roxy Blog this is what Sally Fitzgibbons needs to happen for her to take the World Title battle to the final event at the US Open of surfing in Huntington Beach later this month:

“If Carissa gets 1st in France, she clinches the World Title.
If Carissa gets 2nd or 3rd in France, Sally needs to win to still be in the running and World Title in Huntington Beach
If Sally gets 2nd she is still in the running for a World Title
If Carissa gets 5th in France, Sally needs a 2nd or better to still be in the running.
If Carissa gets 9th in France, the title decision goes to the US Open.”
