Sochi 2014 Women’s Ski Slopestyle: Katie Summerhayes: “I’m fearless, I want to try different stuff and scare myself.”

Katie Summerhayes, the UK’s number one freestyle girl skier hailing from Sheffield, took to the Olympic slopestyle course today to go for Gold! After qualifying third, she was looking to be on great form and before the contest got underway she told Team GB:

“I’ve got something planned. I’ve got something I want to do.”

So we were all excited to see what she had under her skis. But things didn’t go quite to plan on run 1 of the final and it all came down to run number 2 for her. With the pressure on, you could see she was going to go for it!

“I’m fearless, I want to try different stuff and scare myself.”

So after throwing down some technical moves on the rails, she landed an amazing switch 12 on the first kicker (to the commentators delight)! We were loving it, the crowd were loving it (Tim Warwood proclaiming ‘she ripped the lid off it’) but it just wasn’t quite clean enough for the judges to give her a medal claiming score.

Like Jenny Jones, Katie is pushing it for girls wintersports in the UK and with 7th position overall, it’s a more than respectable finish for the Brit. We will be excited to see what she’s got in 2018!
