Oh yes, it was a day of historic events in Pipeline yesterday: not only did the Vans Women’s Triple Crown of Surfing culminated there for the first time ever, but also Australian Steph Gilmore got a double triple so to say, by winning the Triple Crown for the third time, battling against Coco Ho (HAW), and 2011 ASP Women’s World Tour qualifiers Tyler Wright (AUS), and Alana Blanchard (HAW).
“I would trade it all to have another session out there with no one out,” Steph gushed. “It was just exciting to be out there with the girls. I got pretty smashed on my first wave, but you just get in to a zone where you want the biggest and best waves and I got that one nice barrel.”
While the girls are done now, starting into their well earned X-mas holidays, the guys still got some work to do at the Billabong Pipe Masters. After some fierce competition between Dusty Payne (HAW), Mick Fanning (AUS), Owen Wright (AUS), Joel Parkinson (AUS) and Taj Burrow (AUS), the comp will be resumed with Owen against Jeremy Flores (FRA), in the opening Quarterfinal heat.
