This woman just ran 100 kilometres across a mountain in a long skirt, a One Direction t-shirt and sandals, and became our new hero.

The anonymous female runner, who has captured the imagination of the internet through the photo above, joined the official race with other local, indigenous runners in Guachochi, Chihuahua state, Mexico last week. Many of them beat their professional athlete counterparts, with 27 year old local Miguel Lara walking away as the overall winner.

This follows only months after a 22 year old Tarahumara woman won the Ultra Trail Cerro Rojo in Puebla, in central Mexico, wearing shoes made of rubber tyres. The communities that live in the Tarahumara mountains are famously good at running. Author Christopher Mcdougall explored their running culture in his work, finding that they treat the sport as a spiritual experience and a solid party of their community.
