Illustrated Innsbruck

Introducing illustrator and Rhythm clothing designer Becca Allen who recently moved to Innsbruck from the UK

Words by Becca Allen

I had two weeks to pack my bags, say my goodbyes and celebrate Christmas and new year before I moved my life to Innsbruck, Austria. Now I am here I couldn’t imagine living back in England. It has, however, been a crazy month with my new job, ISPO, design deadlines, buying furniture, finding my way around and settling into Austrian life.

So as well as taking on my new role ad women’s designer for Rhythm Europe I have also just finished a collaboration project with a group of designers, artists and illustrators from all over the globe with the zine title Whatever gets you through the night. I illustrated a jug of water highlighting my compulsion to sleep with a glass of water by my bed even though I never drink it! You can check out the publication here. Speaking of jugs I have a new obsession with pots and jars, having illustrated a geometric plant pot poster and t-shirt graphic for next winter’s collection. My desk is also slowly starting to build up with them and my bedroom windowsill is already pot crazy.

I am currently working on some small projects with friends back in London, it’s great how distance doesn’t hinder your creativity and collaboration possibilities. It is actually quicker and cheaper for me to travel via plane to London than it was for me to get the train from London to Devon so I will not hesitate to take some much needed shopping trips to Brick Lane when I get the chance.

So I am now Alp-bound and although I have worked in the boardsports industry for eight years it clearly hasn’t had any impact on my boardsport skills…. Or lack of! Which is fine because when your new housemate is Aline Bock snowboarding is a prime discussion topic, I now have to wait for her to offer to teach me! She is off on a trip to Alaska next week while I pack my bags tonight for my first trip out of Europe and to Australia for a work meeting. I am hoping to find some free time to get in the water, check out the amazing health food stores and do some serious street style spotting.  I have packed the most ridiculous clothes myself, one pair of 80s fluorescent bikini bottoms, my nan’s orange gym top from the 70s and a fresh prince cap to name but a few… I don’t know whether that is because I have spent way too long out of the sun or too many days in an office full of guys.
