Nik are getting a name for being pretty damn progressive this year. From their radically feminist social adverts, to their plus size athletic range and empowering projects, the brand is showing that they're not scared to step out at the front of the pack when it comes to forward thinking ideas.

The company has proved this once again this month with the announcement that they will be releasing a performance hijab for Muslim athletes next spring, becoming the first major sports company to ever include a hijab as part of their main line.

The company, who has also released a wider selection of sizes in their active wear this year, is working to make their offering more inclusive to all consumers all over the globe.


The brand decided to design the item after meeting with UAE weightlifter Amna Al Haddad, who shared her frustration of wearing a hijab while competing.

To design an effective performance hijab, the company sought the help of various different athletes from all over the world, as well as options and views from different muslim communities, with varying cultural requirements.

"As each country has its own particular hijab style" Nike explained in their press release. "The ideal design would need to accommodate variances."

The final product is made from a lightweight polyester with soles for breathability and personalised fitting. Made with fluff threads to avoid rubbing or irritation during activity.


A performance hijab for Muslim athletes is an item that is so obviously essential, that we can't quite believe that it's taken this long for a major brand to offer it.

The fact Nike have decided to add one to their brand now however, says some pretty awesome things about the direction of sport for the future.

“The Nike Pro Hijab has been a year in the making, but its impetus can be traced much further back to Nike’s founding mission, to serve athletes" Nike said in their press release.

"If you have a body, you’re an athlete."
