This Gwyn Haslock surf video is the most inspiring thing we’ve seen all year

Even though she thinks we're a bit mampy pampy now!

LOVE this Gwyn Haslock video! Cornwall’s oldest female surfer and the first ever Women’s UK Surf Champion, who has been surfing most days for the last 60 years, talks about her life, from learning on belly boards to still confusing youngsters in the car park who are surprised and then stoked to see her still getting her surf on, aged 68. Stoke-tastic.

You can watch Gwyn Haslock’s video below and here are some highlight nuggets of inspiration.

On the girl/dude divide:

My father was always very encouraging with me in sport so I don’t really look at this men/women thing in competition. I’m just a surfer and if I feel I want to try it I go out and try it.

On riding Malibu boards in the early days:

I went with Trevor Roberts and he said: ‘You can only surf if you carry your board,’ and in those days they were very heavy and 10ft long

On surfing without wetsuits:

This is me in 1965, you’ll note there are no wetsuits. In a way it was lovely surfing without a wetsuit, it was freedom. People have got a bit mampy pampy now…

On what she loves about surfing:

I just love the freedom of going with the flow of the wave there’s really nothing like it

On young people’s reaction to her surfing:

I’ve had some strange looks as I’ve gone down [to the beach] by young people but then as soon as we get out in the water they can see me can catch waves and perhaps it encourages them…if they see an older person…they might think if she can do it so can I…just go out and enjoy it.
