Welcome to Scratch The Surface

Scratch The Surface – The Film

The great thing about the female scene is that it still maintains that core spirit of skateboarding; its underground roots and the perception of it being socially, something slightly unacceptable to do.

Scracth The Surface

In 2009 the first European female skate film ‘As If, And What?’ was created. The promo for the film alone attracted over 100,000 hits, crashing the website several times on the first day. Following on from the success of the first film, work has started on a new venture – two films by the name of ‘Scratch The Surface.’

The first – A core skate film featuring 12 top female skateboarders from around the world – Mimi Knoop (USA), Evelien Bouilliart (Belgium), Eliana Sosco (Brazil), Lucy Adams (UK), Kate Shengeliya (Russia), Sarah Meurle (Sweden), Candy Jacobs (Netherlands), Kim Wibbelt (Germany), Monica Shaw (Australia), Hilary Pearce (Australia), Georgina Matthews (New Zealand) and Charlotte Borra (Italy). Aside from the skating coverage, the film will look to focus on the rider’s backgrounds and available facilities in their respective countries of origin. It will also visit some of the legendary woman who have helped shape the industry into what it is today.

The second – A supporting documentary film which will explore the lives of not only the established riders from around the world, but also of those who are part of emerging scenes in countries where skateboarding is relatively new. The documentary will introduce an outside audience to the lifestyle and environment surrounding female skateboarders.

The overall aim is to provide a strong outlet for female riders to express their creativity and push the sport of skateboarding further, whilst giving a mainstream audience an insight into an outsider’s sport.

Over the next year Cooler will host the Scratch The Surface blog. It will be regularly updated with photographs and stories giving coverage to female riders from around the globe. There will also be a monthly ‘making of’ video installment to show the ins and outs of making the film.
