With the Euro X Games just around the corner, we managed to grab German slopestyler Silvia Mittermüller on skype to hit her up for a little chat…
How’s your season going?
It has been great other than that I was out for almost a month due to bruised ribs…
What were the highlights so far?
I was the most stoked on preseason. I tried and landed my first Switch BS 9 in December! It was also nice to get a US X Games invite but hurting my ribs there wasn’t so nice.
Are you looking forward to Euro X Games?
Sure I am!
How do you judge your own chances to win a medal?
Well first I have to get into the main event. I am right now first alternate, so if everybody shows up healthy my chances are zero since I won’t be able to compete!
You’ve had quite some bad luck with injuries a while back (two ACL tears straight after each other), are you fully recovered now?
Yes I am. Injuries are a part of snowboarding. You can’t get too caught up with that stuff.
I can imagine that was a horrible time, how did you manage to get through?
Rehab was hard, but you always have to look forward, realize how much you love what you do and why you do it. Once you’re okay again, you have to realise that the injury is in the past and forget it. If you can’t move past your injury you’ll never come back 100% or even move on.
Have the injuries influenced your riding? Or your approach to snowboarding in general?
I´m more conscious than before. I´m not the person to hit a jump first anymore since I know thats the easiest time to fail and go too fast or slow. And that´s when you get hurt. If something feels wrong or sketchy I stay away from it. If something feels right I know I can go for whatever I want.
You were supposed to go to the World Snowboarding Championships, how was it?
I wasn’t there, my ribs were still too hurt and the trip was too expensive to not know if I can really do it. But when I heard how bad the course was afterwards, I was pretty happy I didn’t go there. I was there the year before for the first Arctic challenge that included women and the course was pretty sketchy too.
What are your thoughts on the whole Olympic Slopestyle debate?
I will do it because I’d like to participate in the first ever Slopestyle Olympics. It might be a shitshow, but you can only really have an opinion and talk about it, if you have been there yourself. I think the schedule and contest chaos will be ridiculous next season with Olympic qualifying and everything else going on. But that’s ok. Snowboarding has always been chaotic in some ways.
Anything else you wanna get out there?
I can’t wait to go back to Breckenridge after Euro X Games! Just go ride perfect jumps in Spring conditions with your friends. That’s gonna be the best part of the season.
