The mission was born during a dark and dreary winter’s evening in North Wales over a pint by the fire in our local pub. We were musing about how much fun it is to have a number of girls kiting together at our local beaches and what a shame there were not more girls in the sport. The boys, surprisingly, agreed! So it was suggested that we form a girl’s kitesurf team and try to encourage more into the sport. Another drink and it was decided! So we approached Adam at Turbulence and he immediately agreed to be our team ‘Charlie’. So the Turbulence Angels were formed.
Since then we have encouraged more girls into kiting in every way we can and held several events across the uk offering:
• Free starter kite lessons for Wanna-Be-Angels on the beach 9am until midday on both Saturday and Sunday.
• Jam sessions for female riders in the afternoon at the best location for the day to show off their best Angel-tricks.
• Coaching sessions for any aspiring Angels by top pro-lady riders from the PKRA and BKSA tours.
• Saturday night party.
The events ran throughout the UK and started in mid 2006. The first event was in Llandudno at the Angels home stomping ground. After that they toured the UK attending numerous events all with the aim of getting more girls kiting. We had good media coverage in magazines, newspapers and websites. If you would like to read about our events please visit our website: www.turbulenceangels.com. The site is new and we have some interesting articles in the pipe line! We also worked with the BBC filming a kite ident which is currently running and will be for the next four years, Johara is featured on the ident.
We have a number of exciting things planned for 2007. We will be running our Angels weekends again this year, we are also doing our first Angels trip abroad, we will be attending other kiting events and doing our bit to help others. We are planning to do some charity work raising money for Breast Cancer using to new Flexifoil pink Punk kites and are also looking to raise money for Surfers Against Sewage. We want to run regular magazine articles not only in kiting magazines but expanding to other areas to promote awareness of this wonderful sport.
