Lucie Rose Donlan is not your typical nineteen year old. When we were in our late teens, you could probably find us drinking cider on the beach, or wandering around shopping centres with our mates. Lucie on the other hand, is busy building her own personal empire.

When she’s not  surfing as a Team Rider for Protest Sportswear, Northcore Surf and Adams Surfboards, Lucie works as an ambassador for the Wave Project and spends time modelling in the UK and abroad.

Inspired by Lucie’s amazingly business focused and action sports inspired life, we caught up with her to find out more about what it takes to be a successful surfing business woman before the age of 21. Here’s what she had to say…

1) DJing

Lucie: “This was a photoshoot for a jewellery brand called Tegen Jewellery. It took place in an amazing holiday rental accommodation called Halula Beach House in Newquay. The shoot theme was basically a girly get together and pool party vibe wearing the jewellery and having fun.”

“It was held on a Sunday when the weather was good and we just hung out in in the garden, chilled and enjoyed a day in this incredible house with DJ decks in the garden, a hot tub and a pool full of crazy donut and flamingo inflatables – basically a dream job!”

2) Wave Project

Lucie: “This next photo was taken down at Watergate Bay on the Summer Surf Challenge weekend! I have been an Ambassador for the Wave Project for three years now and have volunteered at this event every year since working with them.”

“This is a weekend where all children can come down and try surf for 30mins to see if they like it or, if they have surfed before and they are members of The Wave Project they can come along and have some fun surfing and making new friends.”

“The Wave Project charity helps young people to reduce anxiety and improve confidence through surfing. Using surfing as therapy has been proven to help their clients feel calmer, more motivated and better about their future. As a volunteer I can honestly say its one of the most rewarding experiences to see these children who have encountered problems in their young lives overcome their fears, have fun and get so much from these sessions.”

3) Body Transformation

A post shared by Lucie Rose Donlan (@lucierosedonlan) on

Lucie: “This is something I wasn’t too sure on posting but I wanted to share my own transformation to show that it is possible to change your shape and make your body stronger just through taking regular exercise. I have never been one for diets (they seriously don’t work!) and so after a year of training hard and changing my eating habits I have regained a confidence with my body that I have never had before.”

“My modelling work had just started to take off in the first image and this inspired me to work hard at keeping fit and healthy. Since then my modelling work has increased to it becoming my full time job as at the last image. I wanted to share with others that I followed my dreams even though I felt I didn’t look my best in the first picture and got where I wanted to be in the end!”

“This is all thanks to working with an amazing trainer called Karen at KA-POW Healthy Living based in Newquay. She doesn’t just work with me on exercise she inspires and encourages me at every training session. She keeps me motivated and has helped me work on my body issues through positive thinking.”

4) Training

Lucie: “A Monday morning training session with Karen is always a good kickstart to the week!” “In this photo I’m wearing my new gear from the Protestwomen 2017 activewear range. Its super pretty, fits really well and is very comfortable to work out in. I love the mesh detail on the back, its my favourite part.”

“I like to share the photos of me actually working out in the clothes that I get sent as an Ambassador for Protest. I think its important for others to see that I’m not just posing for photos to promote the range, but I’m actually putting it to the test. So this is me, actually training, no make and working up a sweat on the battle ropes!”

5) Family Ski Trip

A post shared by Lucie Rose Donlan (@lucierosedonlan) on

Lucie: “This is a Ski Trip with my family we do every year, I love skiing…sometimes more than surfing. I have skied since I was tiny and every year I try and get better and better so that one day I can do a ski season. This jump was part of the Snow Park at Les Arcs 1900.”

“I hyped myself up all week to do this jump and then my younger cousin, Megs (15) just went and did the jump without even thinking…I was like , okay I’m going to have to brave it and do it too, was so much fun because there was a massive air bag to land the jump – it was a pure adrenalin rush!”

6)  Surf Training

Lucie: “I’d worked the whole Summer of 2016 surf coaching with a few modelling jobs inbetween. As a result I’d managed to save a bit of money for a trip away. I decided to travel solo and visit an Island that I know well, Fuerteventura.”

“I’m not the best surfer but I really enjoy it and wanted to combine taking some time out and working on building my confidence and technique. I booked in at a Surf Camp in Fuerte for a month in December with this goal in mind. I was coached by an amazing man called Javier who was the Head Coach and he took me out surfing three times a day for the whole time I was there! He spent time going through the things I was doing wrong and showed me how I could improve through video analysis.”

“The surf can get pretty big on the Island in Winter and so Javier surfed with me which made me feel safer and ready to push myself out of my comfort zone. On the last week I felt confident enough to have some shots taken of me surfing and this was captured by Moncho one of the Island’s professional photographers.”

Lucie: “This amazing makeup is done by Chloe Drew make up artist, but I actually LOVE Halloween its my favourite time of year!”

“I always see women at Halloween trying to be ‘sexy scary’, so last year I decided I actually wanted to go scary rather than glammed up and so this is what I looked like!”

Lucie: “So as you can see…..I’m SO good at the flow rider! NOT! This was a session on the flow rider with some of the Adams Surfboard crew. The group sponsor the flow rider and get a session every year.”

“Didn’t realise how hard this actually is, it’s completely different to surfing, I really could not get the hang of it. At least my favourite part was going in the back wash getting wiped out. I loved that bit it’s way more fun to fall off!”

Lucie: “So this was around about the time I just passed my driving test and I was lucky enough to get a van, which is perfect for adventures!”

“I decided to go on this adventure was when I heard some of my fellow Protest Sportswear Team Riders from Holland were competing in a contest in Croyde. They travelled such a long so I thought I would go offer them a little support. Such a great weekend and I stayed in a little caravan by the beach, watched the contest, had a few little surfs and chilled.”
