This might sound a bit scary, but there’s a hierarchy when it comes to surfing.

We’re not talking high school silliness (although when you’re surfing a local’s spot, it can sometimes feel that way) but there is a definite ranking order when it comes to where the pros and the kooks sit when they paddle out back.

Now this isn’t a hard and fast rule, but if you find yourself in the middle of a pack of veterans, you’re less likely to catch any waves and more likely to get in the way.

Sit further across the shoulder of the wave. You’ll have more room to catch waves and eventually you’ll move up the pecking order.

Just remember, surfers are the nicest people in the world, until you get in the way of their ride….
