Once home to one of the most famous Civil War prisons in the world, Alcatraz Island now annually challenges athletes to ‘escape from Alcatraz’ and embark on one of the toughest triathlons in the world.
Starting from the legendary island and ending at Golden Gate bridge, this epic triathlon attracts world champions the world over.
Participants must plaunge into the icy waters for 1.5 miles swim before jumping on their bikes at the over end for a out-and-back 18 mile trail. All of this before the final 8 mile run to the finish line.
It’s not so much winning this race that will impress fellow athletes, it’s merely finishing it!
