We spotted, youngest girl ever to do a double backflip, Roxy ripper, Katie Ormerod practicing in the park last week at Snowbombing. Fresh from winning the Junior World Rookie finals and appearing on other podiums, she is one to watch for Korea for sure or just generally one to watch because she’s got mad moves! We were excited to get a bit of a chat in with her on the mountain for this weeks Pro Chat…
You just won a competition, can you tell us what exactly?
I just won the World Rookie Finals. It was a really fun competition and the course was really good. But on the first day of practice it was flat light so we were just hoping for good conditions on the final day. I qualified first, which I was really happy about and in the finals the weather held up. We had three runs and I ended up landing my back 7, a cab 1 and the rails.
Nice one! And what have you been up to the rest of the season?
I’ve mainly been doing the World Cups. I did the Junior World Championships just before the World Rookie Finals, and I came third in that. So it’s been a fun season!
You were close to qualifying for the Olympics, how was it watching everyone at it?
It was all or nothing in the last competition and so I had to land my run to qualify and I over rotated one of my tricks so didn’t get there. I loved watching all my friends, I got up really early every morning to watch. I’m so happy for Jenny getting a medal!
Are you excited and focused for Korea?
Yes definitely. I am going to keep training and focusing on Korea. Obviously all the competitions in between that too.
And what about summer, what have you got planned?
Still going out snowboarding and training. Not sure after that. Go surfing in Cornwall for a week!
So something non snowboarding! What other things do you do aside from shred?
I’ve been doing gymnastics since I was 4 and when I’m at home I go climbing and to the gym a lot.
What riders have influenced your riding or inspired you to snowboard?
Jamie Nicholls, he’s my cousin, we’ve been riding together since we were little so he is a big influence. And Billy Morgan because he is doing triples all over the place. It’s amazing to see people like that pushing the sport!
