Pro Chat: Lacey Baker: ‘When I was 8 I became obsessed with how to kickflip’

Catching with the X Games winner in sunny California...

What have you been up to today?

Today we skated the 4th street, avocado heights park. It was fun, did some tail slides on the bank and an ollie to no comply tail slide. Plus some ledge tricks and manual tricks.

This time last week you were at the X Games and had just won gold. How did that happen?

I felt really good at it cause I just wanted to get a consistent run down. Hopefully a run that I would land everything and wherever that put me in the rankings I’d be ok with that. My main goal was to not get injured, so I achieved that! But I am super stoked on winning. It was a lot of fun to be around all the girls and hang out with Alexis Sablone and Vanessa and Leticia, etc.

Were you stoked to see the standard of girls?

The competition is pretty even throughout all the girls. Everybody has their own skill set and applies their style of skating to the course. So it’s interesting to see!

Was getting a Gold on your list of things to do after getting silvers in the past?

I wouldn’t say it was on my list of things to do. Obviously I’ve been wanting to win and thought it would be nice to win. I think for other people it was on a list of things to do for me, a lot of people were asking ‘when are you going to win the gold?’ All this pressure I was getting from different sides and I thought, I‘m skating my best! Sometimes it’s silver, sometimes its last place.
