“I love the parallels in skateboarding and floral design” Anna explained to Refinery29. “You build a structure and you design a story, you design your lines.”

While both skateboarding and flower arranging are both free spirited and artistic hobbies, Anna says that in reality they’re both actually based around hard work and practice.

“There’s a barrier for female skateboarders, there’s a barrier for every outlier”

“With skateboarding you do something over and over again” she says, “with flower arranging you make something again and again, thats how you become fluid, you just do it.”

“Floral design for me is like a physical embodiment of a poem. There’s a relationship to your blossoms and how the colour will move through the story. With skateboarding you also have that relationship with movement.”

While Anna doesn’t skate to make a point about how people see women in the sport, she does realise that her interests are an inspiration to many other women who feel like they can’t fit in a hip skate scene.

To step into a skatepark on your own as a women isn’t just intimidating, to many of us it’s pretty terrifying. If women of all different types were more visible in the skate scene and mainstream action sports media however, more women might feel comfortable getting on a board.

“Within the world of skateboarding I’m definitely an outsider” says Anna. “There’s a barrier for female skateboarders, there’s a barrier for every outlier – what people think you should and shouldn’t be doing.”

“But who wants to pay attention to that?”
