Pro Chat: Eva Kreyer

This week we grilled O’Neill surfer Eva Kreyer from Germany, but not just because we were super jealous of the girls trip to Bali she went on this winter, but also to find how you become a surf pro, growing up miles from the coast

Interview by Anna Langer, photos by O’Neill

How was the O’Neill Girls Trip to Bali?
Bali was stunning and unique as usual! The Balinese people are so friendly and the nature is breathtakingly beautiful. And we were lucky enough on this trip to be sleeping in the Kimacamp directly on the beach.

What do you like best about being there?
The waves, the food, and the many happy faces. And surfing is the centre of the lifestyle there!

Are there any downsides to this seemingly perfect paradise?
Yes, there is a lot of poverty among the people and I’m not a fan of the various drugs that circulate in this scene that seems to be so healthy and beautiful on the outside.

What’s your favourite spot?
I love surfing the Bukit peninsula in the south of Bali.

You’re originally from Middle Germany, how did you get into surfing so far away from the sea?
My dad went to the sea to go windsurfing whenever he could, so we virtually grew up in a caravan. Someday I discovered bodyboarding, I think I was 11… And since my passion at home was dancing, skating and snowboarding, a symbiosis from that only seemed logical to me.

How did it become your career?
That was actually quite fluently, you do a little contest, then you get some more sponsors and the spinner starts whirling.

What tip do you have for aspiring surfer girls that strive for the same career path?
Spend a lot of time in the water, compete in as many contests as you can and train a lot with surfers who are better than you. But most of all, keep the fun alive and stay humble

What about looks?
That’s a big part too of course. That’s how our society works, that’s the human being.

How do you perceive the female role model in surfing?
I honestly haven’t put that much thought in that yet. As long as you know your limits as a model or athlete, I think it’s totally in order that we girls benefit a bit from that, as women never reach the same athletic level as the men.

Did you experience the surf world as macho-driven as it is often depicted?
Of course, it’s the same at every beach. But I don’t mind, most of the times I could laugh my ass off.

What plans do you have for the rest of the season?
I’ll continue my physio degree, try to be as much in the water as I can and look forward to some projects we have in the pipeline. For example a little weekend trip to the Asturias to visit my shaper Slash, a boat trip in April and summer in my surf school in France.

And what goals do you have in the long run?
I would like to face anything that life throws at me with excitement and thankfulness, finish my studies to be able to work in a nice spot on the beach somewhere later on, keep on travelling a lot and enjoy every wave as it is.

Was magst Du dort am liebsten?
