2014 BILLABONG RIO WOMENS PRO – ROUND 1 UPDATE

So following straight after the men’s contest at the Billabong Rio Women’s Pro, the women got the worst conditions (standard!) and surfed as the tide was dropping, but it wasn’t too windy and the 3ft waves at Barra Da Tijuca showcased some great first round surfing.

We had a bit of a shock when Laura Enever battled it out with Steph Gilmore and Alana Blanchard to take the win. Steph had taken an early lead with a few small scores, Laura scored a solid 6.83 to grab the lead and held on for the rest of the heat. Steph will go again in Round 2.

The rest was pretty expected to be honest. Carissa Moore won, Tyler Wright won, Sally Fitzgibbons won, Lakey Peterson won, and Nikki Van Dijk won. They’ll all advance direct to Round 3.

As for the next round, the swell is dropping a bit, but the sandbar should make some great barrels and air sections so watch the live webcast from ASP here.
