Burton’s New Green Mountain Project Hits Stores

New collection utilizes recycled materials and eco-friendly weatherproofing

Just as the Green Mountains of Vermont are turning white, Burton is unveiling the Green Mountain Project (GMP), the company’s first outerwear and layering collection that utilizes recycled materials and eco-friendly weatherproofing technology. The collection of men’s and women’s jackets, pants, fleece and gloves will be available this month at Burton Flagship stores and select Burton retailers worldwide.

Burton Global Team Rider Nicolas Müller is proud to represent the new line and here’s why. “I choose to live a sustainable lifestyle in everything I do by using organic or recycled products that are not harmful to my health, the planet and future generations,” says Nicolas. “Burton’s Green Mountain Project allows me to support my lifestyle through my riding. Everyone plays an integral role in the ecosystem, and as a company, we are trying to do our part in preserving our natural resources and making a positive impact on the environment.”

The new collection’s name is inspired by Vermont’s state nickname, the Green Mountain State, where Burton Snowboards is based. Burton has always focused on developing next-level fabrications for its products, and the Green Mountain Project (GMP) definitely stands up to the company’s high standards for performance, weatherproofing and style.

The shell fabrics of the GMP jackets and pants are made from recycled fibres, which are created from everyday products like plastic PET bottles. Burton added style to the recycled shell fabric by creating one-of-a-kind jacquards, plaids and pinstripe prints. All shell fabrics stand up to winter weather conditions with a 10,000 MM waterproof rating and a 10,000 G breathable lamination rating achieved by utilizing specially formulated films and finishes that have less of an impact on the environment than traditional waterproofing, as well as breathability techniques. In addition, the trims, linings and insulations of all GMP products utilize as many recycled and low-impact materials as possible – even the shock cords, elastic, fleece pocket liners and labels contain recycled materials.

“Even though the environmental issues facing the planet today are overwhelming, doing nothing is not an option – especially when snowboarding, surfing and just being outside is your life, your passion and your business like it is for us,” says Jake Burton, Founder and Chairman of Burton Snowboards. “We’re not kidding ourselves – we know that Burton manufactures a ton of different products, we ship stuff, we travel on airplanes all over the world, we drive to work. We also know that there are big and little ways we can reduce our impact on the environment both at work and outside of work. We’re just getting started with initiatives like The Green Mountain Project, and we have a long way to go. But you have to start somewhere.”
