Burton have been running a series of three UK comps (in our indoor gigantic fridges); the events have taken place at Tamworth, Braehead (Glasgow) and finally MK. The competitions have had the normal slopestyle format with a jam qualifying session going into a two run, final runs.

The latest was the epic event at Milton Keynes (MK) on Friday night, attracting pro riders Laura Berry and Jo Chastney as well as lots of upcoming riders keen to get a slice of the action.

Jo Chastney (sponsored by Forum, Special Blend, Rockstar and Anon) said she loved the event: “It’s exciting as it such a different set-up. With comps you usually get the standard; a rail, jump and pipe, but with this Burton comp you’ve got a skip, steps/rails and a pole jam. So you turn up and god knows what you are going to get.” Jo recognized that it really tests your riding as you have to put your tricks into action on things you have never hit before i.e., jumping in and out of a skip. However, she still managed to style it up on everything!

Jo completely summed up what Burton where aiming to achieve from Scrap Metal, “to push rider’s creativity by putting them in front of obstacles that are not their everyday jibs or rails.”

Jules Chappell, Laura Berry and Emily Williams made it to the MK finals. Jules (who we all love as she coaches all the girls every week at MK and gives real encouragement to all) was riding strong and looking trendy with her new kit (won from a previous comp). Laura Berry (sponsored by Red Bull, Westbeach and TSA) took 1st place.

Alice was killing it on the rails/ steps; being creative she decided to lead the way using the jump to clear the whole stairs with a nose grab. Jules then decided that this was pretty fresh and decided to follow suit.

I enjoyed the comp, choosing the pipe (ollie on), missing the steps/ rails as the consequences of getting the rail wrong looked a little daunting i.e., falling flat on the steps and skidding down them! (I will build up to this risk though!), then the skip and finally the up rail with 180 off. Everyone was here to have a good time and I felt privileged to be riding with some of our top pros. Got pretty knackered jumping onto the top pipe about 20 times, but pleased to have pushed myself, so finished up enjoying a nice drink whilst congratulating our winners.

Thanks to Burton, they have encouraged our ‘yet to be discovered’ riders (not sponsored) to battle it out to win a place on the ‘Burton trip of a lifetime’. The three lucky winners (all guys and from each event; Tamworth, Braehead and MK) have all won a trip to Morzine (France) to stay in the luxury snowboarder/ skier hangout, ‘Rude Chalets’. My only objection is that I am sure taking girls on the trip would have glammed it up?

Rude Chalets host the test centers for Burton Boards and all rooms are themed around Burton and Gravis; with Xbox 360’s and LCD screens in every room. This is the coolest hangout where you can play Shaun White snowboarding after your day on the slopes. Not only have the winners won a great week away, but also the opportunity to be mentored by the Burton riders and to shoot for Document Snowboard Magazine.
