Calling all surfers, sea lovers and general good people! Your local beach needs you big time!
Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) have got together with Barefoot Wine for the fourth annual Barefoot Friendly Beach Rescue Tour. From Porthtowan, Cornwall to Saltburn, Cleveland via Newgale, Pembrokeshire and er Greenwich Pier, London said tour will be hitting 14 UK beaches between May and September.
Depressingly the amount of marine junk and detritus dumped on UK beaches has almost doubled in the last 15 years, with 1 piece of litter being found on average every 30cm. Plastic debris is especially problematic, since 1994 the amount washed up has increased by 135%, as it can take hundreds of years to decompose and can be deadly to marine wildlife. Over 95% of birds recently tested in the North Sea had ingested plastic items and a staggering 100,000 marine mammals and turtles die each year from ingestion and entanglement. We need to sort this shit out!
To help make a difference at your local beach get involved with the tour (dates and locations below). It will take around 3 hours from 2-5pm, and volunteers will get a free tee, plus an SAS/Barefoot hosted barbie with samples of Barefoot wine. Surf music star Ben Howard will be playing some thank you gigs for lucky volunteers at Porthowan, Kingsbarn and Whitley Bay.
