On February 24th, new-school skiers will make the heart of Bad Gastein unsafe with the launch of the Red Bull PlayStreets event.
Natural Playground
With 16 invited new-school skiers from 8 countries; a tough course covering about 480 metres; an expert jury with eagle eyes. On 24 February 2007, in the centre of Bad Gastein, big names such as the Fischer skiers Richard Permin (FRA) and Martin Misof (AUT), Julien Regnier (FRA), Sven Kueenle (GER) and Tim Russel (USA) will be faced, for the first time, with a PlayStreet featuring spectacular natural obstacles.
Opposite the Salzburger Hof hotel and beginning with an 8-metre drop-in jump, the challenge is to perform a corner on a giant rock, traverse a street gorge, complete a rail on a roof, and more, in about 45 seconds, in order to make a good impression on the jury with some acrobatic jumps and much creativity. Starting with a wall drop-in and continuing past the “Mondi Holiday Bellevue”, the finish is reached in the “Meran Garten”.
For the 8 new-school skiers with the best scores, the qualifying rounds (three attempts) are followed by an exciting knock-out mode which, over three rounds, determines the participants in the big final. The path to bathing in the crowds and to a well-deserved after-party in Silverbullet will not be easy. The four athletes who have qualified for the final (two rounds) will take on the battle for honour, the title and the prize-money. “There’s nothing like PlayStreets. Natural obstacles have hidden dangers, yet offer more possibilities to demonstrate one’s skills!” – Sven Kueenle (GER) sums it up as he faces the six judges who will hand over the 6000 Euros in prize-money.
The day before the event – 23 February 2007 – has an “Einkehrschwung” in the Casino Austria in Bad Gastein on the programme, though it will probably be hard to find a “poker face” amongst the skiers while the official drawing of lots for start numbers takes place!
