Surf and Travel Photography Course

New for Big Friday in 2008 is ‘Introduction to Surf and Travel Photography’ – a residential course, in Morocco, with professional surf photographer Lucia Griggi.

This introduction to surf and travel photography is primarily aimed at anyone that wants to take the next step from amateur photographer to the real deal and the course will cover portraiture, travel documentary and in-water shooting. Here’s the full low-down…

If you are an amateur photographer with a passion for documenting travel, surfing and other water sports, then this is the course for you.

Lucia Griggi’s work regularly appears in the top surf magazines as well as the fashion press. She divides her time between homes in Cornwall and Venice and travels the world on photographic assignments. Her work appears internationally in magazines, including Cooler!, and her industry clients have included Rip Curl, Headworx, Sri Lankan Airlines, Calvin Klein, Rimmel and Davidoff.

Lucia is a regular official photographer on the ASP World Tour (WCT), ASP World Qualifying Series (WQS) and UK Pro Surf Tours. Already in 2008 Lucia has photographed surfers at the O’Neill Highland Open in Thurso, the Ripcurl Pro Santander World Tour event in Spain, the Sri Lankan Airline Pro in the Maldives, the Quiksilver Pro in France and the Billabong Pro’s in South Africa and Spain. She will finish the year in Hawaii, swimming and shooting Pipeline. Phew!

Who is suitable? This course is suitable for amateur photographers with an interest in travel and surf photography who are looking to move into the photographic industry professionally, whether as a full time career or part time activity. Professional photographers looking to develop their knowledge of surf and action photography will also find this course useful. Due to the in-water component of this course we request that to participate you are able to swim 50m in open water and have a good level of fitness.

Course Dates: 12th to 17th November 2008 (5 nights)

Course Fee: The course fee is £549 and this includes:

– Full daily tuition with Lucia Griggi (as specified in the course schedule overleaf)
– 5 nights accommodation in a beachside villa in Taghazout
– Breakfast and lunch every day
– Evening meal with wine every day (except one night to explore local restaurants!)
– Airport transfers from Agadir airport (NB. A cheap transfer is also available from Marrakech – please ask for advice on flights).

Optional extras include: Surf tuition, board rental, wetsuit rental, extra nights accommodation.

Accommodation: The spacious beachside villa is on the edge of Taghazout village near Agadir in Morocco. Delicious and hearty breakfasts, lunches and dinners are prepared by the villa’s own chefs using locally sourced produce.

The villa has wifi access and there are also internet cafes in the village 5 minutes walk away.

Tuition Locations: Indoor teaching sessions and editing sessions will be held at the villa. In-water shooting sessions will be held at local beach breaks to which transport is provided. On location sessions will be held in and around local beaches, villages and in Agadir.

What to bring: You will need to bring your own digital camera, however basic, and a laptop for the editing component would be useful but is not essential. Please bring a wetsuit if you have one, otherwise wetsuits are £6 per day to hire (required 2 days).
