Proper respect for Rachel Atherton. This year she’s won the World Championships, the World Cup Series Overall, and British National Championships, she now has 19 World Cup wins the most of any Brit rider ever, annnnnd Rachel even found time time to tell us why her big bro Dan Atherton is her ultimate hero.
And now there’s a campaign to get the broader public to recognise how rad Rachel’s achievements are. All you need to do to get involved is nominate her for BBC Sports Personality of the Year here and the Sunday Times and Sky Sports Sportswomen of the Year award here.
While we’re stoked that post-London 2012 women in sport are getting more recognition than ever we still wish it was the likes of Rachel Atherton and Jenny Jones rather than athletes from the more mainstream PE-style sports as they can be a turn off for a lot of young girls in our humble opinion.
Of the campaign Rachel Atherton said:
I’ve been absolutely overwhelmed by all the brilliant support, I can’t believe when I go onto Twitter and Facebook and see all the fantastic things that people are saying. It only matters because it’s time that mountain-biking got the mainstream attention that it deserves – it’s such an amazing sport and if I can encourage anyone, especially the girls out there to give it a go then I’ll be over the moon.
